A Sweeter Music
Sarah Cahill’s project to commission 18 composers protesting and reflecting on war, violence, and the nature of peace, is a fantastic project that has been made even more lovely by the addition of breathtaking three channel video projections by John Sanborn.

Two excerpts from the Cal Performances in Berkeley, CA on January 25th, 2009:
Mamoru Fujieda – The Olive Branch Speaks
The Residents – drum no fife (Why We Need War)
Four Organs – Crash Ensemble
The Crash Ensemble starting off … by crashing. Maybe they should’ve put that on the Reich Remixed album.
A House (and Opera) in Bali
Evan Ziporyn has posted video clips on Vimeo from the Indonesian performance of his new opera, “A House in Bali” based on the book of the same name by Colin McPhee. As spare as the scale of the performance is, looking at these videos gives the sense that even the western voices seem a bit overwrought so far away from the west. There is also an extensive piece Ziporyn wrote on NewMusicBox which is well worth the read. He talks about how he deals with being the outsider, much in the same way that his subject did.
