An Audacious Addition to NonPop
Feb 25th, 2008 by Scott
My web blog up to this point has solely been a container for my podcast.
I wrestled with the idea of writing a blog alongside the podcast very early on, but concluded that for one it would be too self-centered to write and expect people to read my thoughts since I’m not anyone important like Kyle Gann or Alex Ross. Also there’s a worry about being profound enough, or worse, saying something so facile that my words begin to veer toward the navel-gazing best left to a private journal.
In the end though, I realized that the community of folks interested in the marginalized genres of music that makes my ears smile, exists largely through the medium of web spaces. Most of the musicians, composers and thinkers I know who share my interests are people I’ve never even met. I know them through their websites, email conversations and blog posts. It is these folks who I’ve “met” which reinforce to me that my musical interests are not alone and matter.
So, I make no promises for profundity or superficiality. No one asked me to start blogging. I’m just a guy with lots of enthusiasm for music that I spend too much time seeking out and ruminating over by myself. Certainly my voracious search has reinforced the sure constant of my ignorance, so I will promise to try and be honest and without pretense. Ideally you’ll be witness to me thinking out loud, for all the flaws and benefits it will have. If I find something that engages me I will share it and right alongside share my definite opinions or (more likely) uncertainties.
To make this much less like a podium and more like a table-in-the-round, I do solicit your constant comments. Without your sparks of thought, this becomes a dead entity and not much fun.
